Shopping in Rabun

Peruse for your Most Favorite New Piece

Does there really need to be an occasion to shop? “That looks like something my sister would love” means it is going home with me, saved for a special day. Poking around antique stores always yields something interesting, especially if it came from the local region. Talking to shop owners is an adventure by itself. They are passionate about their stores and their communities and are willing to share all kinds of insider information. In towns across Rabun County talented artisans and craftspeople display their works in galleries and specialty shops. I’m always awed by what imagination and hands can create from yarn, cloth, paint or even nature’s bounty. The beautiful lodges, inns, and museums sprinkled throughout the mountains have gift shops, some with locally made crafts and foods including cornmeal and grits from nearby grist mills. Now that’s a local delicacy I truly want to take home and enjoy!

Weaving An Interesting History

The relative isolation of the North Georgia Mountains meant settlers had to become self-sufficient in order to survive. From this, a deep mountain culture was born with rich music and unique artisans and craftspeople. Take the Weave Shed Gallery, part of the Hambidge Center. Originally a weaving production studio, the building, on the National Register of Historic Places, is now a gallery offering an outstanding collection of pottery, sculpture, fiber arts and other interesting artworks. Many galleries are owned by the artisans like Timpson Creek Gallery, Peter McIntosh Photography, and Broderick Crawford Gallery. The Main Street Gallery has been recognized for its contemporary folk art. There are studios for working artists like the 3 Legge Art Gallery. Through festivals and weekly summer concerts, the music of the mountains is celebrated, sometimes in a theater, sometimes in lawn chairs in a historic town square.
